Cycle Rallarvegen

Explore the historic Rallarvegen from your bike seat. In the open high mountains, you can see over a hundred years of railway history and the mighty Hardangerjøkulen in the distance.

In late summer, you can cycle across Hardangervidda all the way from Haugastøl, or from northern Europe's highest railway station at Finse, on the old construction road from the building of The Bergen Line.

After climbing over its highest point, the road winds its way down through increasingly narrow and lush terrain. In Klevagjelet you can see Kleivabrua, one of the most impressive buildings on The Bergen Line. Perhaps the most dramatic part of the route is where the road plunges into The Flåm Valley with the 21 hairpin bends in Myrdalsberget. Here, the adventurous can take the shortcut with Flåm Zipline - northern Europe's longest zipline. And yes, you can actually bring your bike!

From here, follow the road to the bottom of The Flåm Valley, with steep mountainsides on both sides. Old cluster houses cling high up on the mountain slopes. Many of them are still in operation.

Finally, you come down to Flåm by the Aurlandsfjord, the gateway to the Nærøyfjord World Heritage Area.

Practical information

  • The 20 km section between Myrdal and Flåm takes about 2 hours to cycle. The road is usually free of snow from June to October.

  • The snowmelt normally allows cycling over the high mountains between Haugastøl and Myrdal from mid-July. Always check the snow conditions when planning your trip.

  • The weather can change quickly in the mountains. Remember warm and waterproof clothing.

  • There is limited space for bicycles at both The Flåm Railway and The Bergen Line. Remember to buy a bicycle ticket if you want to bring your bike on the train.

  • It is often easier, and in some cases cheaper, to rent a bike than to bring your own. Bicycles can be hired at Myrdal, Finse and Haugastøl in addition to Flåm. Bikes rented at Myrdal, Finse or Haugastøl can be returned to Flåm.

  • Take your time and keep your speed low, especially on the section down Flåmsdalen where you can often encounter car traffic.

  • The tour can be divided into several stages with accommodation at Finse, Hallingskeid (DNT cabin) or Vatnahalsen Hotell.
